Kieran Sharkey is Reader in Mathematical Sciences. He has an interest in how systems are conveniently represented or understood in terms of networks, which leads to a large number of interesting mathematical problems with real-world applications. He is particularly interested in biological applications including epidemiology (contact networks) and metabolic or regulatory networks in living organisms. Recent work has focused on competition dynamics including strain competition between viruses and between bacteria. Methods include stochastic simulation, differential equations and probability.
